Interview: Daniel Palmqvist ( XORIGIN)

Hi, I am Michael from Melodic-Rock-Inside.com. Thank you for having time for the interview. I have some question for you .

1. What are you currently up to?

We’re currently doing promotion work for our new album, like interviews, radio shows and recording radio promos and so on. And we’re also doing gigs/studio session with various projects of course, business as usual, haha. Johannes and I also write songs for other artists, sometimes with each other and sometimes with others.
Also we’ll be starting to rehearse for future gigs with XorigiN this fall (although no dates are confirmed yet).

2. Could you take us through your excellent  album „State of the art“ and some of the ideas/stories behind the songs please...

Thank you very much, I’m glad you like it!

Well, the albums opening track is “Can’t Keep Running“, which deals with the subject of not trying to run from your problems. Musically we feel that this song shows a lot of what this band is about. It’s also the track that we chose for the video.

“Crying For You“ deals with the not so unfamiliar theme of “love lost”. In essence; Girl leaves boy, girl is mean, boy is sad, haha. It’s a song Johannes and I wrote quite a while ago in an earlier version of the band-

In The Blink Of An Eye“ is the last song we wrote fort his album. I wrote the basic song and as Johannes started to add his vocal arrangements it turned more into a Chicago/Trevor Rabin kind of track. It’s one of our strongest songs in my opinion.

Track no 4, “Too Late” was written by my good friend Robert Säll of W.O.A. What can I say? A great up-tempo AOR song!

“Gina” is next. This is a song with a lot off different influences musically. When I wrote the riff I was going for a Winger/Ratt kind of vibe. Then in the bridge we ended up in a more Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) vibe . We’re both suckers for harmony vocals I guess, haha. Lyrically it’s a bit ambiguous. It’s clearly about a woman who’s “bad news”, but in what way is up to the listener to figure out.

“This is it” is track no 6 on the album. It’s also an earlier song. It’s about trying to be positive in this world where so much bad things seems to happen all the time. I guess this is as “political” as we get on this album;-)

“The One For Me” was a co-write between myself, Sören Kronqvist (Crash The System, Issa), Robert Säll (W.O.A) and Johannes. The three of us wrote the basic track, and then Johannes came up with this killer hook for the chorus. Another song on the “love lost theme”.

Next track, “Said And Done” was mostly written by our producer, Daniel Flores. A great rockin’ track. And surprise, it’s also about “love lost”. Are you starting to see a pattern, haha?

“Matters To The Heart” is next, and it’s a slightly mellower track. And this time the theme is “love found”. About time one might think, haha. Also, my buddy Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry, Kaipa) contributed with an excellent guest solo in the outro. He’s one of my oldest friends and favorite guitar players, so it was great to get him on the album.

“What Love Is All About” is another contribution by Robert Säll, and once again the man delivers a great song. Oh yeah, it’s also about “love lost”.

“Mend My Heart” closes the album, and it was written by Daniel Flores and Angelica Rylin. It’s a beautiful ballad with a fantastic vocal performance by Johannes. The song’s about partying all-night and sleeping all day… no, just kidding… love again;-)

3. How has the reaction been so far, from reviewers and fans to the  album? Are you  pleased with the reviews and reaction to it?

The reception of the album has been very good so far! The reviews has also been great with very few exceptions, so we’re very pleased of course. Fans of AOR seems to dig the album!

4. Please tell how did XORIGIN come together?

Johannes and I met in 1998 while we both where studying at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. We became good friends and started a band called “Orange Crush”. After returning to our home countries of Sweden (for me) and Norway (Johannes) we continued with the band and recorded new songs and so on, but after a couple of years we put the band on ice after other commitments started to take more and more of our time. We did continue to write together and play on each others albums though. But it really feels great that we finally have recorded this album and that we are in the same band again!

5. Where do you get your songwriting ideas from and who musically is an influence on you?

That’s a hard question to answer. At least for me the “birth” of every song is different. But usually I get a melody in my head or a ”phrase/hook” which I sing and record on my iPhone so I don’t forget it before I get a chance to start working on it in the studio. I’ve noticed that I get some of my best ideas when I do something totally different than music. I might be in my car, or play a computer game. I have this theory that it might have something to do with that when the conscious mind is occupied, the sub-conscious mind kicks in and creativity happens… a highly personal theory I might add, haha.

As far as influences go they’re many. The most obvious ones would be Toto (especially the “Hydra” and “Isolation” albums for me), Yes (Trevor Rabin era), Giant, Journey, Winger, and Asia to name a few and in no particular order. But I like many different styles of music and bands/artists, and to me “a good song is a good song” no matter the genre.

6. Are there any plans for live dates in Europe or specially in Germany and how easy/hard is it to get a decent run of tour dates?

For the moment we’ve had some offers, but nothing is confirmed. We would of course love to get to tour on this album, but time will tell. As far as booking an entire tour goes I wouldn’t know too much about that. We wouldn’t mind to tour a bit supporting Journey or Toto, for example  (I hope Neal Schon or Steve Lukather reads this, haha)

7. What's in the pipeline now?

We’re continuing to write more songs and to record new demos for the next XorigiN album, and doing interviews and promotion. We’re also having discussions with some excellent friends/musician’s to be a part of our live band.

8. Who are your musical heroes and why?

Once again Toto come to mind, great musicians, great songwriters. I’m also very inspired by Kip Winger. Both by the Winger albums, but also by his solo albums, especially “This Conversation Seems Like A Dream”, which is a masterpiece in my opinion. As a guitar player some of my heroes are Dan Huff, Steve Lukather, Eric Johnson and Kee Marcello. And then about 352 more guys, haha.

9. What really gets on your nerves and really annoys you at the moment?

I’m not avoiding this question, but I try hard to not let things get on my nerves, haha. Trying to always focus on the positive aspects of life is very important I think, as negative thoughts and attitudes can harm you as a person and creates more negativity in the world. I know this sounds a bit “flower powerish” but do believe the things we focus on mentally will manifest in our lives, and it’s up to us to choose if it’s going to be positive or negative manifestations…

10. Message to your fans...

Pleasy check out our album if you haven’t already. And please give us feedback on myspace.com/xorigin, and on our FaceBook page. We would love to hear from you, and we also hope to see you on the road in the future!

Thank you and good luck with your album and all the best for the future.

Thank you Michael!
