Interview: Eric Martin (MR. BIG)

Eric Martin von MR.BIG hat sich Zeit genommen um einige Fragen für Melodic-Rock-Inside.com zu beantworten.

1. Could you tell us please what are you are currently up to?
Hanging with my wife and two sons, buying another good suitcase and gearing up for a tour around the world.

2. The new MR. BIG Album was released at 21. January. Could you take us through the excellent new album “What if… “ and some of the ideas/stories behind the songs please...
The music on this album was written by all of us but the lyrics and melodies were an individual thing. Paul wrote a beautiful and heartbreaking song called “ All the way up”. It’s about wishing you had another chance to say I love you after your special someone passes away. I wrote a song called “ I won’t get in my way” about the failures in my life that happened because of me and no one else..  Failure is not an option anymore.  Pretty deep stuff wrapped in dirt, sweat, grease and genuine live rock & roll. Yee-haw!

3. Where does the band get their song writing ideas from and who musically is an influence on you all?
Everybody has individual tastes and influences. I grew up listening to Motown, Stax/Volt and the Stones. I write about the hurdles, struggles, fears, heartbreak, lessons, humor, love, sarcasm and orgasm of everyday life.
4. The band recently reformed in the original line up, how did this come about?

I played a festival in Italy a few years ago and Pat Torpey was there. We talked about our families and Mr. Big came up in conversation. We both said we had missed playing those songs and rockin’ out on stage with the other guys.  When I got home I had the itch to correspond with Billy . It was like the domino effect , Billy reached out to Paul and the next thing you know the bands gets back together. It took a while but it was pretty simple& painless.

5. What were the highlights of MR. BIG in the past? Looking back if you could change anything what would it be and why?
Having a number 1 hit single in 15 countries, touring with the biggest bands in Rock music;Aerosmith, Rush, Scorpions and travelling all over the world many times. I guess if I could change anything I would change those bad rock poses in themagazines and that crazy hairstyle of mine. I mean come on… a grown man with bangs.

6. Are there any plans for live dates in Germany and how easy/hard is it to get a decent run of tour dates?

There are dates in Germany and more shows are coming in. It’s all about the promoters, were ready willing and able to play anywhere. Germany has always been at the top of the wish list.
7. How do you view the internet and downloads? How has the internet helped get your music out there?

The Internet is a great promotional tool and a great environmental asset but there is an overabundance of theft. I write songs for people to hear but I also make a living from it. There is no honor system among downloader’s. Granted there are people like me that buy a download but there are folks that take it for free with “Mack the ripper” or some kind of bootleg device.
It’s not cool or fair, am I supposed to rely on tour/concert money to feed my family. What happens when I can’t work anymore and all my music is pilfered. I don’t want to be negative but we need some Internet organization.
8. What really gets on your nerves and really annoys you at the moment?

The internet.  Other than that life is good and I couldn’t be happier.
9. What do you like doing with your spare time outside of music?
Playing and watching football with my two sons Dylan and Jacob, firing up my PS3, watching  old film noire movies from the 40’s & 50’s.

10. Message to your fans...
I’m so sorry that it took 15 years for MR. BIG to patch up our differences but if it weren’t for you keeping the door open for us we would never have done it.. so thanks brothers & Sisters.
